CMA Members Speak Out Against Proposed Abortion Amendments

October 28, 2024

By Tim Millea, M.D.

Every four years, a precautionary note is proclaimed by presidential campaigns: “This is the most important election of your life!”.  Of course, hyperbole is standard fare in politics, but for this year’s election, that statement is distressingly accurate. The results are very important, but not only to us today. The 2024 election will have a multigenerational impact for those who come after us.  However, the most troubling question is whether or not they will be allowed to come after us.

CMA Physicians join Gov. Ron DeSantis in explaining why the proposed Amendment 4 in Florida is medically dangerous for women.

On November 5th, voters in ten states will face a choice that is truly a matter of life and death.  Measures intent on expanding abortions in those states will be on the ballot. If approved, the absence of restrictions on abortion will result in an ever-increasing loss of unborn lives. In addition, the potential institution of pro-life laws would be severely compromised, if not impossible. (Information regarding each state’s proposal can be found below.)

Opposition to these measures has been led by the bishops and their Catholic Conferences in each state. At the forefront of the public debate has also been the voice of many CMA members. Whether as individuals or as participants in organized groups speaking the truth about these dangerous initiatives to women and the unborn, CMA physicians are to be commended. They have been vital members of prominent groups, such as Florida Physicians Against Amendment 4 (FPAA4) and Colorado’s Harms of Amendment 79.  In all ten states, the involvement of these physicians is critical to the defeat of these disturbing proposals.

In these final days before Election Day, our efforts must not only be sustained but increased, whether we live in one of the ten states or not.  Many voters remain undecided, and the prominent voice of our Catholic ethics and logic can make the difference. Talk with your family, friends, colleagues, and patients about the dangers of these measures. Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper. Post your opposition on your social media. Do everything you can to help defeat these deceptive initiatives.

The most powerful weapon we have is God and the trust we have in His will. Taking public action will be even more impactful with an elevated commitment to prayer and fasting. Commit to a daily Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet. Increase your time in Eucharistic Adoration. Join in a Eucharistic Procession. Accept the USCCB’s call for a daily “Prayer for Life”. And start this St. Michael Novena today.

Our battles with the forces of evil and darkness will certainly continue regardless of the outcome on November 5th. However, the profound help we receive from Our Lord and Our Lady will sustain our efforts, temporally and eternally. In these final days to the election, join your CMA sisters and brothers in confronting the culture of death.
