“First Saturdays” is an initiative to connect area Catholic doctors and healthcare providers with Christ and His Church. Under the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit and through the intervention of Saints Cosmas and Damian, this innovation of the Kansas City guild of the Catholic Medical Association helps doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers deepen their faith and connect with their peers.
The First Saturday events unfold at either Christ the King Catholic Church, 8510 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO or St. Michael’s 14251 Nall Ave, Overland Park, KS. The event schedule is slightly different at the two parishes. Please refer to the published schedule (above).
The events include Mass, recitation of the Rosary, an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and social time with coffee and donuts. A short interactive lecture concludes each event, delivered by a variety of speakers and related to pertinent topics. In keeping with the “New Evangelization of the Catholic Church,” this format allows us to be more active participants in our own formation and in applying our faith to our individual and collective lives. It also allows us to better discuss the role of our Catholic faith as it applies to our daily professional practices in healthcare.
The program covers a broad range of medical and spiritual topics related to all of the contemporary issues facing Catholic doctors and healthcare providers today. This will be an interactive format with Catholic catechesis and discussion. The goal is to enkindle the fire of the Holy Spirit among doctors and healthcare providers, strengthening the spiritual foundation necessary to integrate Christ and His Church more fully into any healthcare setting. Like leaven (Matthew 13:33), we aim to transform our families, our parishes, our practices and our hospitals. Organized as the CMA, united in the Truth, and with the support of both the Diocese of Kansas City/St. Joseph (MO) and the Archdiocese of Kansas City (KS), Catholic doctors and healthcare providers will transform the future of healthcare in our community
