Cincinnati Fetal Center and Bambino Gesù Hospital have signed an agreement of collaboration to implement advanced fetal surgery interventions in Rome

Advances in Prenatal diagnosis in the last decades allows the precise detection of most of fetal malformations. Intrauterine interventions are now contemplated to correct or interfere with the natural history of these anomalies. Many in-utero procedures, including minimally invasive techniques, such fetal endoscopy, are now therapeutic possibilities that improve survival and quality of life of these little patients. These interventions offer a new alternative for parents facing a detected malformation that sometimes can be severe or devastating. Fetal Care Centers are now proliferating worldwide, and Bambino Gesù Hospital started recently first steps to implement these surgeries.

Prof. José Luis Peiró, a pediatric surgeon from Barcelona specialized in fetal surgery, was a pioneer in creating one of the first Fetal Surgery Centers in Europe, leading this innovative program in Barcelona for 12 years, before he moved to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital 5 years ago. Currently, he’s co-director of the Cincinnati Fetal Center (CFC), one of the cutting-edge comprehensive Centers in the field of fetal therapy worldwide. Recently, Dr. Peiró and CFC agreed to establish a mentorship collaboration with Prof. Pietro Bagolan and Bambino Gesù Hospital, to boost the fetal surgery program in Rome. On July 9th, Prof. Peiró will give a Lecture in the Roman Institution as invited professor to start this collaboration that hopefully will provide the implementation of several prenatal surgical interventions to improve the prognosis of many newborns.
