CMA Commends the Trump Administration for Re-establishing the Scientific Definition of Sex as Male and Female

The Catholic Medical Association (CMA-USA) commends the Trump Administration for the immediate action in re-establishing the science-based definition of sex as male and female.

“In the executive order signed on his first day in office, President Trump demonstrates his administration’s commitment to science and facts rather than ideology and political pressure,” said Board Member Dr. Tim Millea, the chair of CMA’s Health Care Policy Committee. “Sex is a binary factor, and CMA welcomes this acknowledgment of incontrovertible truth in the practice of ethical medicine.”

CMA has been sounding the alarm on the dangers of “gender affirming care,” which continues to be promoted in the United States by some leading medical associations despite the evidence to the contrary found in European countries that were once leaders of such care.

The executive order notes that sex does not mean nor include the concept of gender identity, “which reflects a fully internal and subjective sense of self, disconnected from biological reality and sex” and therefore “does not provide a meaningful basis for identification and cannot be recognized as a replacement for sex.”

For that reason, the order calls for all government issued IDs, including passports and visas, to only use male and female, rescinding the practice of the Biden administration allowing people to use X as a gender-neutral marker on their passports. The order also calls for federal agencies to eliminate any statements or policies “that promote or otherwise inculcate gender ideology,” and to enforce “laws governing sex-based rights, protections, opportunities, and accommodations to protect men and women as biologically distinct sexes.”

CMA President Dr. Michelle Stanford hopes that this action will move the country and the medical field toward compassionate care for those suffering from gender dysphoria.

“My prayers are with those who have been harmed by the false ideology that our biological sex could be changed,” Dr. Stanford said. “It is time to provide compassion and support to our youth in mental health crisis instead of spreading confusion around their sexual identity.”

“The erasure of sex in language and policy has a corrosive impact not just on women but on the validity of the entire American system. Basing Federal policy on truth is critical to scientific inquiry, public safety, morale, and trust in government itself,” the executive order states, “Accordingly, my Administration will defend women’s rights and protect freedom of conscience by using clear and accurate language and policies that recognize women are biologically female, and men are biologically male.”

As the leading voice in Catholic health care, Dr. Millea notes that “CMA looks forward to supporting this administration’s efforts that improve the provision of evidence-based health care which fully respects the dignity of every life, from conception to natural death.”
