Master Our Role in a Changing World As we enter 2024, we face a complex landscape of ethical challenges. From artificial intelligence and advanced directives to LGBT rights and ongoing debates on abortion, we as Catholic doctors in Hong Kong need to think carefully about these issues and how we can respond in a way that reflects our faith. As individuals, we hold a unique position. We must balance between providing the best medical care and upholding our ethical commitments. With the development of AI, we must ensure responsible use, safeguarding patient privacy, avoiding bias, and prioritizing humanity. Advanced directives require us to respect our patients’ wishes while ensuring their decisions would align with the Catholic Church teachings.

In addition to the above, we must approach sensitive topics like LGBT and abortion with empathy and understanding, offering pastoral care and support while advocating for policies that protect the dignity of all human life. Besides the ethical issues stated above, another important issue we are facing is that priests and nuns also face challenges of aging and chronic diseases. We should leverage our medical expertise to help them promote healthy lifestyles, manage their chronic conditions, and provide end-of-life care that aligns with their beliefs.

By offering our knowledge and compassion, we can improve their quality of life and demonstrate the transformative power of faith and community. As Catholic doctors, we have the privilege and responsibility to bring healing and hope to a world that needs both. By embracing the challenges and opportunities before us, working together, and living our faith with courage and compassion, we can make a real difference in the lives of those we serve.
