View online version Saturday February 22nd marks the feast of the Chair of St Peter which has been celebrated in Rome since at least the fourth century. It signifies the unity of the Church founded upon the Apostles. Late last year the historic Chair of St. Peter, a wooden throne, was on display for the first time in 150 years, and only the second time it has been exhibited since 1666 when it was first encased within Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s monumental bronze Baldachino or canopy under his stained-glass Dove of the Holy Spirit window at the Basilica’s apse. Regarding the beauty of artistic achievement, the Cardinal Vaughan Schola Cantorum recently visited Australia for the first time. This renowned Catholic boys choir performed Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and William Byrd’s Ne Irascaris, Domini at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne. As a reminder of what the covid lockdowns wrought upon our society, this online performance of the Schola Cantorum highlights both the resilience of the human spirit and the harmful actions of our public health, military and political leaders during covid.
