After completing his medical studies, he worked in Innsbruck, Austria, where his mother was from, and from 1913 onwards he was the director of the Institute of Public Health in Zagreb and professor of pathological anatomy at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb. As a member of an international commission, Jurak investigated the massacre of peasants and workers in the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia in 1943 and concluded that this crime was committed by the Soviets in 1938, which is why he was arrested and killed at the end of the war, on the orders of the communist authorities.
