PHILADELPHIA July 10, 2018 — The Catholic Medical Association (CMA) enthusiastically supports President Donald Trump’s choice of traditional jurist Federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court held by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Kavanaugh, an experienced jurist has a strong record of protecting life and religious liberty.
“A major tenet of CMA’s mission is to support life from conception through natural death. Judge Kavanaugh has a solid record of protecting life and constitutional rights. We believe one of the most important commitments this President has made is to continue to uphold his promise to nominate only pro-life judges to the Supreme Court as he did with Justice Neil Gorsuch,” said CMA President Peter T. Morrow, M.D.
Judge Kavanaugh recently rejected the ACLU’s argument that illegal immigrant minors in U.S. custody should have a constitutional right to abortion on demand. He also opposed the Affordable Care Act’s birth control mandate forcing religious organizations to provide contraceptive coverage for their employees citing religious liberty concerns.
The 53-year-old is a Yale law school graduate and has served on the D.C. Circuit Court for more than a decade. He worked for President George W. Bush and clerked for Justice Kennedy. He and his wife Ashley have two daughters. Kavanaugh, a practicing Catholic serves as a lector at his Washington, D.C. church, volunteers with Catholic Charities and tutors students at the Washington Jesuit Academy.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says he’s committed to have the Senate confirm Kavanaugh by the fall, in time for the new justice to join the Supreme Court for the start of the term on October 1, 2019.
We at the CMA pray the nomination process for this thoughtful and principled jurist is fair and objective, respecting the rights of all.
