CMA’s Main Event: The Annual Educational Conference

April 14, 2025

The Annual Educational Conference, now in its 94th year, stands out as one of the most significant events hosted by the Catholic Medical Association, serving as a beacon for the medical community and those passionate about the evolving landscape of healthcare in our nation.

The AEC not only addresses the pressing medical challenges faced today but also provides a much-needed opportunity for spiritual renewal, allowing healthcare professionals to reconnect with their faith amidst the demands of their profession. Participants will have the chance to earn continuing medical education credits while engaging in profound spiritual practices such as daily Mass, confession, and Eucharistic adoration.

This year’s theme, “Tradition: Ever Ancient, Ever New,” is particularly relevant as it invites attendees to explore solutions to the troubling regression in the practice of healthcare despite the remarkable technological advancements in medicine over the past century.

While these advancements have undeniably decreased mortality rates, extended life expectancy, and enhanced the quality of life for many, they have often led to dehumanizing care and a loss of understanding of the medical profession as a sacred vocation.

“It is crucial for us, as healthcare professionals, to reclaim the essence of our calling, integrating faith and ethical practice into our daily work to ensure that we not only heal the body but also honor the dignity and sanctity of every human life,” said Dr. Anthony Oliva, the conference chairman.

Presentations will examine different models for practicing medicine, educating medical students and caring for dying patients. It will also address the timely topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and medicine. The conference culminates with the banquet keynote address delivered by Sister Deirdre Byrne, M.D., P.O.S.C., retired US Army Colonel and General Surgeon.

This year, leaders from a number of Catholic organizations will be in attendance. The conference Mass will also include members of the Catholic Bar Association for a joint White and Red Mass.

The AEC is not merely a conference,” added Dr. Oliva. “It is a transformative experience that encourages networking and community building among like-minded professionals who share a commitment to integrating Catholic principles into the practice of medicine.”
