Catholic Medical Association (USA) Joins Coalition to Launch Women’s Healthcare Declaration
October 22, 2024
The Catholic Medical Association joined a coalition of doctors and medical organizations to sign and launch the Women’s Healthcare Declaration to promote a program of dignified health care for women, especially surrounding pregnancy.
The Declaration calls for accurate information about abortion to be given to patients as well as urging medical leaders, medical associations, and agencies to communicate accurately about pregnancy, pregnancy complications, and state laws.
“Contrary to the misinformation, states with no abortion or regulated abortion laws do not prevent health care professionals from providing women care for a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, an incomplete abortion, or any other life-threatening condition related to pregnancy,” said CMA President Dr. Michelle Stanford. “For example, Catholic hospitals have always treated ectopic pregnancies effectively according to specific Catholic moral guidelines as noted in the Declaration.”
The Women’s Healthcare Declaration was launched during an Oct. 22 Press Conference in Washington D.C. on the Feast of St. John Paul II, where members of the coalition addressed why there is a need for this declaration and action items moving forward to improve women’s health care, especially surrounding pregnancy.
In addition to the CMA, the Declaration is signed by the following medical and health policy organizations: Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine (AHM), American Academy of Medical Ethics (AAME), American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs (AAPLOG). American College of Family Medicine (ACFM), American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds), Catholic Health Care Leadership Alliance (CHCLA), Christ Medicus Foundation, Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA), Guiding Star Project, and North Carolina Physicians for Freedom (NCPFF).
“The Declaration outlines the facts necessary in caring for pregnant women and their babies in a manner that values both,” said CMA Board Member Dr. Tim Millea, chair of the Health Care Policy Committee. “The Women’s Healthcare Declaration is a clear response to the onslaught of misinformation causing more harm than good.”
